Chinese Contemporary Artist --Zhong Biao

Click Paintings to enlarge...

Zhong Biao was born in 1968 in Chongqing, Sichuan Province. He graduated in 1991 from the Zhejiang Fine Arts Academy and is now an associate professor at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. His paintings have been exhibited worldwide and he was one of China's most famous artists.

Zhong Biao’s art and his artistic values have to be understood in the context of the cultural and social changes happening in China. As a sensitive artist, he has captured the pulse of China’s social reforms through the visual symbols that have been a part of Chinese cultural life for centuries. Seeking to emphasize the continuity of time, rather than its disjunction, he juxtaposes the old with the new. The porcelain appears alongside the Mao, the sculpture alongside the McDonald's – successfully creating a holistic experience of the values and traditions of his native culture.

Rage, Rap and Revolution: Inside the Arab Youth Quake

Excerpt:

In less than two months, this generation has already wrought political change on a scale not seen since the end of the Cold War. The class of 2011 has felled two despots and forced other famously inflexible rulers to make concessions, some dramatic (Yemen's longtime President Ali Abdullah Saleh has promised not to run for re-election) and some desperate (King Hamad has offered every Bahraini household the equivalent of $2,700). And all this was achieved by largely peaceful demonstrations and despite the absence of clear leaders.

There may be more to come. Growing protests in Bahrain and Yemen could lead to greater concessions from their rulers. And the Arab uprising has already given a boost to the flagging Green Revolution in Iran. (That, in turn, has provoked a fierce crackdown by government forces.) There have also been demonstrations in Libya against the regime of "Brother Leader" Muammar Gaddafi. So who are the Middle East's new revolutionaries? Where do they come from, and what do they want?

China tries to stamp out 'Jasmine Revolution'

Jittery Chinese authorities wary of any domestic dissent staged a concerted show of force Sunday to squelch a mysterious online call for a "Jasmine Revolution" apparently modeled after pro-democracy demonstrations sweeping the Middle East.

Authorities detained activists, increased the number of police on the streets, disconnected some mobile phone text messaging services and censored Internet postings about the call to stage protests at 2 p.m. in Beijing, Shanghai and 11 other major cities.

The 6 Most Unhealthy Foods You Should Avoid at All Costs

Some people swear by the mantra "everything in moderation," but the truth is, some foods, no matter how good they taste, are better off left alone.

In other food news...

Two veteran executives from McDonald's are starting a restaurant chain to revolutionize the fast-food industry -- by serving food that isn't harmful to your health.

Lyfe Kitchen, a Chicago-based company whose name is short for "Love Your Food Everyday," will replace many of today's fast food with healthy alternatives.

For example, in the Lyfe kitchen, butter, cream and high-fructose corn syrup are banned, and none of the food is fried. Sweet potato fries, for instance, are oven-baked. All of Lyfe's menu items contain less than 600 calories, including signature dishes that include a Niman ranch beef burger with agave ketchup and pickles. The desserts are expected to be dairy-free.

The Work of an Undiscovered Street Photographer Rocks the Art World

Chicago nanny Vivian Maier died in 2009, leaving behind 100,000 negatives that no one but she had ever seen. Her work was discovered by chance, and now the photographs she took on her days off are being hailed as 'ranking up there' with the best in 20th-century street photography.

The Story:

The story of Vivian Maier is so incredible that the man who discovered her says: "If you made this up for Hollywood it would be like, 'Oh, come on, that's too hard to believe.' She is," he adds, "the most riveting person I have ever encountered."
This is 29-year-old John Maloof, a former estate agent from Chicago who has devoted the last four years to unravelling Maier's story. His obsession began in 2007, the year he placed a $400 bid on a box of old negatives in an auction, hoping they might be useful for a book on Chicago's history that he was co-authoring. "Nothing was pertinent for the book so I thought: 'Well, this sucks, but we can probably sell them on eBay or whatever.'"
It was only when the book was finished a few months later that he looked at the negatives again and slowly realised he was in possession of something unimaginably precious. He began printing and posting Maier's photographs to a blog , which he describes as "a snowball that just started rolling and has just been building ever since. Experts started chiming in and they said, 'Holy cow, this is… huge."

Immigration Reduces Crime Rates

Harvard University sociologist Robert Sampson examined crime and immigration in Chicago and around the United States to find the truth behind the popular perception that increasing immigration leads to crime.

Based on assumptions that immigrants are more likely to commit crimes and settle in poor, disorganized communities, prevailing wisdom holds that the concentration of immigrants and an influx of foreigners drive up crime rates.

However, Sampson shows that concentrated immigration predicts lower rates of violence across communities in Chicago, with the relationship strongest in poor neighborhoods.

Not only does immigration appear to be "protective" against violence in poverty areas, violence was significantly lower among Mexican-Americans compared to blacks and whites. Sampson refers to this as the "Latino Paradox," whereby...
